Alternative use for the Sunny Sunflowers Crochet Square

Photo by Karen Wiederhold

Do you love my Sunny Sunflower crochet square pattern that I released last week, but you don't want to make a blanket?

Why not leave off the final two rounds of the pattern, which turns the centre circular motif into the final square shape, and use it as a heat protector/coaster for your teapot.  I love finding the versatility within my projects while designing them🌻.

You'll find the pattern in my Free Crochet and Charity Patterns section.

Hello

Thank you so much for popping by.
First post in a while and feeling so happy and inspired.

I've been on a design break for a while but excited to be back in 2020 and have some new ideas up my sleeve.

I'm busy making some adjustments and updates to the blog, so things look a little sparse at the moment but wont be for long.

Two new things i've done already is to set up an Instagram and Facebook page.  Up until now i've only had this blog for my designs.  I'm looking forward to connecting more with you here and also out on social media.

I have archived a large number of posts from the blog because I want to change the type of posts moving forward.  I am leaving a small selection of projects and patterns up for you to enjoy in the meantime.

Mitred Granny Square Pattern first published here in 2013

This is a pattern that I came up with in around 2013 for a granny square with a difference.  I have gotten a bit bored with the look of the granny but wanted to make a blanket that was easy to make while watching TV or chatting with a modern twist to the traditional design.  With some trial and error the Mitre Granny Square came about.

It has been a firm favourite on this blog since I first published it here February 2013, so if you missed it first time round, here it is again to enjoy.

Have fun.

Snazzy Circle Squares

Patons UK Smoothie DK yarn and 3.5mm hook.

Round1.
Ch5, join to form ring.

Round 2.
Ch3 (this forms first Tr), Tr11 into ring, join to first Tr with SS to close round.  (12 Tr's)

Round 3.
Join new yarn into a space between Tr's.  Ch3 (this forms first Tr)  Tr1 into same space, Tr2 into each space,  join to first Tr with SS to close round. (12 clusters)

Round 4.
Join new yarn into a space between clusters.
Ch3 (this forms first Tr)  Tr2 into same space, *Ch1, Tr3 into next space* repeat * to * to end.   Join to first Tr with SS to close round. (12 clusters)

Round 5.
Join new yarn into a space between clusters.
Ch4 (this forms DTr) Tr2 into same space, *Ch1, Tr3 into next space, Ch1, Tr3 into next space, Ch1,  Tr2 and DTr1into next space Ch2 then into this same space DTR1 and Tr2 to form a corner* now repeat * to* to end, join to first Tr with SS to close round.

I joined the motifs together by working single crochet on the outward facing edges to form a defined border between each square.

First I joined five squares together at a time, then when I had five strips, I joined these together.  The finishing edge around the whole piece is worked in double crochet stitches.

To make a cushion: Make two pieces as shown in the photo above, or make one piece as shown above and a second one as a single large Granny Square.

Place the pieces together with the right sides facing out and crochet three of the sides together using Double Crochet stitches.  Place the cushion pad inside and crochet the final side together.

Loopy Flower Motif

© Karen Wiederhold

I hope you enjoy making these Loopy Flowers as much as the fun I had in creating the design and pattern.  Whether you make one flower to turn into a brooch or produce a whole bouquet of these motifs joined together to reveal scarves, wraps, cushion covers etc, I wish you lots of joy.

The flower pictured above was made using oddments of Double Knit yarn from my stash and 3.5mm hook.

Round 1:   Using white, Ch5 and SS into first stitch to join into a ring.

Round 2:   Ch3, then Tr11 into the ring, SS into first stitch to join.

Round 3:   (Ch6 skip a stitch then SS into next stitch) and repeat until you have five loops. Ch6 then SS into the base at the start of the first loop of the round and tie off.

Round 4:   Join on blue yarn in one of the stitches skipped in previous round.  Working behind the white loops created in earlier round (Ch6 then SS into next skipped stitch from previous round) and repeat until you have five loops.  Ch6 then SS into the base at the start of the first loop of the round and tie off.

Round 5.   Join purple yarn at centre point of blue loop, (Ch8, SS at centre of next blue loop) and repeat to form 5 purple loops, Ch8, SS into the first chain of first loop to join.

Round 6.   In this first petal loop (Ch3, Tr9, SS into same loop then SS into the next loop) and repeat for each petal, ending with SS, tie off yarn.

How to Crochet a Granny Square

This was the first crochet motif I learned to make and it has been used time and again for all sorts of projects.

Make a whole batch of small motifs and join them to form a patchwork style blanket or cushion cover.  You could make one very big square consisting of several rounds and have a giant one-square blanket.

Stitches used:
Ch = Chain
SS = Slip Stitch
Tr = Treble Stitch

1.  Ch5, SS into first chain to join into a ring.

2.  Ch3 (acts as first Tr), Tr11 into the centre of the ring, SS into space between first and second Tr's to close the round.

3.  Ch3 (acts as first Tr)Tr2  Ch2  Tr3,  then *Ch1, skip 3 Tr's then into next space Tr3 Ch2 Tr3* repeat from *to* two more times, Ch1,  SS into space between first and second Tr's to close the round.

4.  SS along top of Tr's of previous round to the corner space.  Ch3 (acts as first Tr) Tr2 Ch2 Tr3, * Ch1, Tr3 into space, Ch1 Tr3 Ch1 Tr3 into next corner*.  Repeat from *to* two more times, Ch1, SS into space between first and second Tr's to close round.

5.  Repeat in the style of round 4, working corner sets in each corner and Tr3 groups separated by Ch1 along each side.

Grow your granny square to whichever size you choose, working each round as before in Round 5.  You will notice that with each round you make the number of Tr-groups increases along each side of the square.
